The past is irrecoverable, but past greatness is recoverable.

This has long been an aspiration, dating back at least to the bible, which in Lamentations 5:21 states "חדש ימינו כקדם" (usually translated as "Renew our days as of old").

Such a desire to make things great again is heard in our own times as well.
