On Saturday evening, students and faculty gathered on the steps of Widener Library to mourn Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist slain last week while speaking on a college campus.
There is a sadness in this that is much deeper than compassion for Charlie Kirk and his family.
Something else died with him. The idea that you could talk freely about politics. It used to be called "the liberal ideal." But, that was back in the days of classical liberalism. Today's liberals don't even deserve the title. "If, by a liberal" does not apply to them.
So glad to see that this happened, peacefully, at Harvard.
As a conservative father of a conservative daughter who intends to apply early decision to the college this year, I admit to having hesitations about sending my daughter to modern-day Harvard, and those doubts were magnified by last week's events.
Charlie Kirk's assassination has also stirred up my political side, which has been somewhat quiescent recently, as I have been focusing on my PhD in Molecular Biology and on starting a a new business - a lifelong dream that is still unfulfilled at age 58.
I have now broken radio silence on Facebook, though I know that Facebook is for old folks like me and is not really where the action is, politically. I'd like to share one observation with folks here.
Someone said something to the effect that Charlie Kirk was a racist, insinuating that he deserved what he got. I replied by stating what I see as the truth. He was actually not a racist. He was only painted as one by leftists desiring to demonize him and thwart his agenda.
Then, it occurred to me. It doesn't matter if he was a racist or not. He should not have been shot for having a particular political view, regardless of how distasteful that viewpoint might be.
To boldy assert, as this Italian Professor does, that violence is part of what America truly is and to propagate that view, as this so-called poet does, is not simply to neutrally describe what has been in America but rather to actively promote it happening again.
America is, and America becomes, what each combination of generations wants it to be. The American system of government can be changed and changed quite dramatically by a series of elections and judicial reappointments. The American government, and our culture, becomes what the majority wants it to become.
Those who say otherwise ... who assert that there is an inherent violence to America that is unavoidable ... are not-so-subtly promoting violence in America right now. They are attempting to create a self-fulfilling prophecy of angry left-wing violence against conservatives, right here and right now in 2025 American politics.
Make no mistake, they are not passive academics spreading the truth that they see from their removed perch in ivory towers. Rather, they are using their professorial credibility to actively promote an agenda, an agenda that condones violence against conservatives right here and right now. They are the generals of the culture wars - well positioned as the thought leaders of pliable, emerging youth to enact their own agenda by manipulating students and student opinion.
Charlie Kirk was not a symbol of toxic culture, as the New York Times erroneously reported, Charlie Kirk was a scapegoat of toxic culture. Infuriated by their 2024 election losses, angry leftists sought a scapegoat outside of their own party. Rather than humbly self-reflecting on their failed policies in a good-faith effort to improve their party for the next election, they sought revenge ... violent revenge.
Using lies and deceptive media campaigns, the left demonized Charlie Kirk. And, the culture of assassination was amplified by authors like this, who casually dismiss violence as a natural outcome of our political process. "Oh, don't worry too much about it," they say. "It happens. It's part of the process." While these professors provide moral cover, underground activists (think antifa) are actively promoting assassinations of right wing leaders in the darker corners of the internet.
It is true that we have had periods of violence, but those periods, like now, arise not from inherent flaws in our system, but by the deliberate choices of pundits and activists alike. Violent culture, as any culture, is deliberately 'stoked' by propaganda and peer pressure.
Hello - Thank you for the information. Your naturally defensive feedback is understandable considering how there is information you may not know about, yet. Knowing this info helps explain things.
The following 1 hour social psychology lecture explains why humans vote for and support authoritarians, worldwide. The 2016 US presidential election is used as an example. The speaker is beloved professor Dr pSheldon Solomon. He and his colleagues wrote the significantly relevant book, “The Worm at the Core: the role of death in life”.
Sheldon was featured in Michael Moore’s documentary “Planet of the Humans”.
Sounds like you and this Professor Sheldon are promoting assassination as a solution to authoritarian leadership.
Violence is not inherent in our system. In fact, our legal system is designed mostly to prevent and avoid violence and promote compromise.
From where I sit, you and your "beloved" professor Sheldon are actually inciting violence, not studying it, Incitement is illegal in America, not a natural part of our heritage at all.
In my book, that makes you more of a witch than a poet.
Please if I may. Between the time I posted “Election 2016 Fatal Attraction” and your reply to this, to be fair, you did not watch the one hour lecture, and jumped to false conclusions.
First the vigil. Then the vigilance. Make this honest and deeply patriotic young man’s life count for something.
Outstanding thoughts!
Thank you !

FULL STOP.
Back to the Molecular Biology.
You guys are the best. Your courage and commitment are sorely needed now.

More academic support for assassination, eh?
How convenient for the left.
Hello -
Please relax and watch the two videos when feel up to this.

Right - lies. 🤣 Apparently you didn’t bother to go into any of his podcasts with him actually saying all of those hateful things.
Wow, quite an impressive number of lies packed into that cold-blooded screed.
Estimated attendance?
